It was a world first: on 24 November 2020 the Scottish Parliament unanimously voted for free access to health protection for all menstruating people, in order to combat menstrual precariousness.
Absorbents and sanitary pads distributed free of charge
Almost a year and a half later, the law went into effect in Scotland. It is the local authorities that have the obligation make tampons and sanitary pads accessible free of charge to anyone who needs it in the area: in pharmacies, social centers or in certain public places.
In practice, at present, the offer varies according to the municipalities. Thus, the Edinburgh City Council website cites, for example, the possibility of ordering for free online, while the different municipalities seem to offer various types of protection (stamps, cup menstrual pads, washable, etc.). The PickMyPeriod application, launched yesterday, will be used find the distribution point closest to you.

A measure that owes a lot to the mobilization of a group of high school girls, Business ladywhose speeches in various schools and in Parliament had marked the minds, and of which we hope will mark the beginningglobal political awareness of the cost of menstruation.
In France, distributors of free menstrual protection have been installed in universities for several months. A first significant step in the fight against menstrual precariousness, which is destined to worsen in the face of current inflation. When next?
