In the wake of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, yet another title has been put on the block, and this time it’s the DC series. Strange adventures. Writer and director Kevin Smith first shared the news on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast that the DC Comics series will not move forward with the streaming service.
Strange adventures received the green light for development, along with aa Green Lantern-inspired show, in 2019. Green Lantern seems to still remain on track.
Smith, who was supposed to direct and co-write an episode of the series, said on the podcast that the episode was to revolve around Bizarro and Jimmy Olsen. The writer and director said of the decision: “[Axing Strange Adventures] it made sense to me: no one necessarily knows these characters and it seemed like an expensive show.
“Strange adventures shares its name with a classic DC Comics series that debuted in 1950 and broke new ground as the first science fiction anthology title from the venerable publisher of Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman. The easy days of the series were dominated by vivid but whimsical plates with B-movie concepts (Challenge of the genius of the gorilla, The man with the comet’s head, The skyscraper that came to life), but the series eventually introduced a gallery of sci-fi adventure heroes (including Space Ranger, Star Hawkins, and Atomic Knights).
The editorial history of Strange adventures took a sharp turn after 200 monthly issues when it became more of a supernatural mystery-based franchise. Those 1960 numbers included one of the most compelling DC characters of that era featuring the desolate Deadman, the ghostly hero created by Neal Adams who cannot be seen or heard but can possess the bodies of the living.
Are you sorry? Strange adventures was it demolished?
