Earlier this week, director Peter Jackson shared that the team behind that of Amazon The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power he initially approached him for his help and told him they would send him the first two scripts when they were completed. After that, Jackson never heard from them again.
It seems the reason behind this is that while they were developing the story for The rings of power, they found themselves disconnected from what Jackson had done with his films. Series director JA Bayona recently told SFX Magazine:
“We all love what Peter Jackson did and, right at the beginning, we thought about creating a kind of bridge between the show and the movies. But then, when you realize the complexity of each world, you get invested in your story. Then, unconsciously, you start creating something that has a life of its own.
“The standard was very high and I’m glad Amazon had the ambition to go there – I tried at least to match what Peter Jackson did – but the more we worked with the characters and the story, the more we were unconsciously disconnecting from the movies.”
It makes sense that this series differs from the Jackson trilogy, but at the same time the visual aspect of the series was clearly inspired by the Jackson films. I really hope this series is fantastic and at least comes close to the high bar that Jackson set.
The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power “Is set thousands of years before the events of JRR Tolkien The Hobbit And The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era where great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the thinnest threads and the greatest villain to ever come out of the pen by Tolkien threatened to cover the whole world in darkness. Begun in a period of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they face the much-feared resurgence of evil in Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elven capital Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest corners of the map, these kingdoms and characters carve out legacies that will survive long after they’re gone. “
The series will debut on Prime Video on September 2, 2022.
