Last weekend during Comic-Con, Marvel released the first trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda forever and offered us our first look Tenoch Huerta in the role of Namor the Submariner. Now we have learned something new about this character who changes his tradition from comics.
In the comics, Namor comes from the underwater realm of Atlantis, but that’s not the case with the MCU. He was recently revealed in a press release for Black Panther merchandise that in the MCU Namor comes from “Talocan”, which has its roots in the mythical Aztec water paradise of Tlālōcān. This makes the tradition more in line with Huerta’s Mexican heritage.
Tlālōcān is described in several Aztec codes as “a paradise, ruled by the rain deity Tlāloc and his consort Chalchiuhtlicue. He absorbed those who died from drowning or lightning, or as a result of diseases associated with the rain god. Obviously, Marvel is changing it to suit their own story and character’s purposes. But it’s an interesting change, which I think will work out well. The trailer that was released for the film showed an impending conflict between Wakanda and Talocan.
Huerta spoke recently Variety to put on his Namor costume for the first time, saying, “I mean, everyone pretends to be a superhero or to be a part of it. [these] movie, and then you are a part of it. And then you’re the superhero, and then you put on the costume. It’s your skin, your voice, your brain, your talent, your story. It is overwhelming.
