Over the Comic-Con weekend, Netflix released a new trailer for Neil Gaiman ‘s next series The Sandman. During the panel, Gaiman revealed this Marco Hamill (Star Wars, Batman: the animated series) will play the role of Mervyn Pumpkinhead in the series.
In case you missed it, there was a short shot in the trailer that offers the first look at Hamill’s Mervyn Pumpkinhead, and I just wanted to point it out in case you missed it!
Mervyn Pumpkinhead is Dream’s tired and wise janitor. He looks like Jack Pumpkinhead from L. Frank Baum’s Oz books. Mervyn is in charge of the construction, maintenance and demolition work in the Dreaming, although he sometimes complains that his work is superfluous as Dream can change it at will.
This is a great character in the story and Hamill will be great in the role. I can’t wait to hear what kind of voice he came up with for the character.
Speaking of the show, Gaiman said:
“For over 30 years, my share Sandman adaptations was just to try and stop the bad ones from happening, “says Gaiman.” And luckily, I’ve always been successful at that. We have arrived at 2020 and Sandman it was the largest DC comic book property that had not yet been adapted: it was widely regarded as one of the crown jewels; it was the adult comic that changed everything. This adaptation is the first time I am willing to come aboard. We have reached a point that didn’t really exist when the Sandman comics began. Longer format fictional television series now have the special effects and budgets to bring this world to life. Technologically, I really think that right now we are at a point where we can do Sandman in a way that we could not have dreamed of accomplishing even 15 years ago, not even 10 years ago. So now it is possible to do Sandman, but not easy. It is very difficult. But the resources are there, the people are there, the skills are there and the determination is there – and the fact that we now have a whole generation of high-level creative people who grew up reading. Sandman who love it and want to bring it to life with authenticity. The determination everywhere to do this and do it right was absolutely a breath of fresh air. This is Sandman made for people who love Sandmanby people who love Sandman, and it’s so amazing to me. It was so special. I feel like I’m at the peak and I can’t wait for people to see this show. “
In the series: “There is another world that awaits us all when we close our eyes and sleep – a place called Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), shapes all our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held captive for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will forever change both the dream world and the waking world. To restore order, Dream must travel across different worlds and timelines to repair the mistakes he made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and enemies and meeting new entities, both cosmic and human, along the way.
The cast includes Tom Sturridge as a dream, Carlo Danza (game of Thrones) as Roderick Burgess, Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) like The Corinthian, Patton Oswalt (AP Bio) as the voice of Matthew the Crow, Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The good place) like Death, Jenna Coleman (Doctor who) like Giovanna Costantino, Joely Richardson (Pinch / tuck) like Ethel Cripps, Vivienne Acheampong how Lucienne, and David Thewlis (the Harry Potter film) as John Dee.
The series was developed and produced by showrunner Gaiman Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey’s Anatomy), And David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Terminator: Dark Destiny, Foundation).
The series will premiere on Netflix on August 5, 2022.
