‘Whiplash In Concert’ Will Launch World Tour In October; Composer Justin Hurwitz Directs Jazz Big Band Alongside Movie

Special: organizers whip in concert He announced Thursday that his live concert series will have its world premiere at the Orpheum Theater in Boston on October 28. At the concert, Oscar-winning composer of the film, Justin Hurwitz, will lead an 18-member jazz big band ensemble playing Hurwitz’s music to accompany Damien Chazelle’s 2014 film.

The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won three, including star JK Simmons. It was the first of several collaborations between Hurwitz and Chazelle; Hurwitz won two Oscars for Chazelle’s Original Song and Score. World in 2017.

“There will be an emotional, exuberant big-group jazz performance and incredible drum solos that go with the movie,” Hurwitz said. “Also, I love this movie, I’m very impressed with it, and I’m excited for people to see Damien’s amazing writing and directing on the big screen again.

The concert series is a co-production of Bold Films with the Cutting Edge Group and Hurwitz Concerts. After Boston, the concert will air on various dates, including in Toronto on October 30, and will have a premiere at the Seoul festival scheduled for November. Tickets go on sale here on Friday.
