The Netflix catalog has several films based on real events in which children have faced difficult times of their life, but who have found a way out of these situations on their own, with the help of family or people close to them.
The boy who tamed the wind
One of films based on real events with underage protagonists and which are on Netflix is ’The Boy Who Tamed the Wind’, a drama film directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who in turn stars in the story with Maxwell Simba to tell the true story of a little genius who managed to save his community from drought and famine they experienced.
“The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” tells the story of William Kamkwamba, played by Maxwell Simba. Born and raised in Malawi, Africa, he has always lived day to day; until drought, poverty and famine reached such a level that he sought a way to help his family and community: when he was just over ten he built a windmill to bring water to his land, reactivating agriculture in the area after years without a single drop.
They killed my father first
Another of the movies based on real children’s stories that Netflix has in its catalog, is “They killed my father first.” This film was directed by Angelina Jolie and starred Sareum Srey Moch as activist Loung Ung during her childhood.
The phase of Loung Ung’s life that ‘First They Killed My Father’ tells is the one lived in the 70s when, as a girl, she lived the Cambodian civil war at the hands of the Khmer Rouge, a period in which those who, together with their family, tried to stay alive despite the repression and the context of violence they experienced day after day.
blue miracle
On the other hand, Netflix’s ‘Blue Miracle’ is also a film based on real events, but with a slightly more optimistic tone. This Julio Quintana film recalls the effects that Hurricane Odile had in 2014 along the entire coast of Baja California, Mexico; and especially in an orphanage in the region.
The story of ‘Milagro Azul’ is that of a group of orphaned children who, with the intention of earning money to help recover their orphanage after Odile’s death, joined an experienced fisherman in a fishing contest and tried to catch the winning fish that could financially support them and all their roommates.
