Earlier this month, developer Tribute Games and publisher Dotemu released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. The game is a tribute to the classic side scrolling arcade fighting games of the 80s and 90s, but it’s a brand new game and not just a remake or remaster. The game was released on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One with a retail price of $ 24.99. The team was kind enough to provide me with a copy of the game on Nintendo Switch, but all thoughts below are mine.
I remember as a child, on the rare occasions that I was somewhere with an arcade cabinet, I was always looking for the TMNT play and try to play. I never got very far, but it was a blast. Shredder’s Revenge it seems like I remember those games were. The game looks like those classic arcade games and is very well done in many areas. Many of the original cartoon voices reprise their roles, the music is stellar and the graphics look perfect. If you like side scrolling fighting games, I really recommend this one. If you like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, get it! This is great!
One of the things that works really well is multiplayer. One of the great things about the game is that you can have up to six people playing on the same console or online (or a mix) at a time. Couch co-op is really easy to do and so if you want to play with others, it’s also very easy to join random groups. At the moment I don’t have any friends who have it on Switch, so I couldn’t test how easy it was to join a friend’s group, but I guess it’s not difficult. Multiplayer is drop-in and drop-out, so you can join a group that has 90% completed a level, help defeat the boss, and not have to do any of the difficult things that brought them. It was done very well and playing with 5 other people is chaotic in the most fun way possible.
There is a story mode and even though I haven’t completed it, I understand it’s really short at under 4 hours. That said, there are collectibles and challenges to keep you playing. If the story mode isn’t challenging enough, there is an arcade mode that simulates arcade play. You get fewer lives, you can’t save your progress, etc.
In fact, my only complaint is that the game currently doesn’t support cross-play / cross-progression with the exception of cross-play between PC and Xbox. That said, I’ve heard the team are hoping to include console cross-play along the way.
At the end of the day, Shredder’s Revenge it’s almost perfect for what it was meant to be. Sure, there are a couple of levels that drive me a little crazy (the ones where you automatically advance on hoverboards), but the game is a pleasure. I highly recommend it and feel it is definitely worth the $ 25 that is asked for.
