The comedy of the entanglements is a classic and very common in French cinema and theater. Love, intrigue, infidelity and betrayal from the point of view of vaudeville, with which the creators introduce irony and satire to talk about both the lowest passions and the purest desires. Even if you follow that line, Director and actress Mélissa Drigard tries to reinvent the genre in her second feature, “An Unexpected Lio”.

Drigard, who co-wrote the script with Vincent Juillet, really he makes a mission statement at the beginning, with a long introduction to the family and married life of Audrey and Jérôme, in which he denotes chemistry, but at the same time distance. So, the director takes the opportunity to create a scene worthy of vaudeville, in the purest “Be unfaithful and don’t look with whom” style. And it is here that Drigard bets on leaving the formula, leaving the audience disoriented, who will enjoy the usual moments of the sitcom … only with an unusual reflection on marital and family relationships.
Drigard escapes the sitcom cliché and does so, curiously, by betting on a series of sequences that, a priori, would seem the opposite., how to make the biggest tangle. Well, after the spouses and their lovers (who are a handsome Italian heartthrob and an exuberant 20-year-old), her parents appear, as well as their children and friends. Yes, Drigard plays with a choral plot in which misunderstandings and double meanings proliferate. However, This does not prevent the director from playing with it to introduce a series of sequences that live up to their title, as they are not foreseen in this type of production.

Intertwining and infidelity with a touch of clever comedy
In addition to functioning as a sentimental and intelligent sex comedy, “An Unexpected Mess” shines thanks to its main actors. Both Elsa Zylberstein and Stéphane de Groodt are comedy experts, both moving like a fish in the water with their marriage roles in crisis. There are the secondary ones, Karidja Touré had given little to the comic genre and here shows a vis between series and humor that works, a mention also for the Italian Giovanni Cirfiere. Of course, magnificent success with the in-laws, because Guy Marchand and Anne Benoît act as a counterpoint to a marriage of veterans.
After showing the irregular “Never the first night”, Drigard is better off with his family and marital reflection in ‘An Unexpected Mess’, what a different comedy, who knows how to live good times that go beyond the conventional genrewithout having to give up hilarious situations, which shine thanks to a magnificent team of actors.
Note: 7
The best: Those moments of intelligent comedy that surprise in a proposal of plots.
Worse: Its final part is too conventional.
