Among the most representative creatures of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ saga stand out the orcs, beings with a monstrous and terrifying appearance and thirsty for human, dwarf, elf or hobbit blood. In the original trilogy we remember them for being part of Sauron’s army, but in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” they will be fewer in number and they will fight to survive in Middle-earth, a thousand years before Frodo embarked on his journey into “The Fellowship of the Ring”. Now, IGN has revealed the first exclusive footage of the orcs in the Amazon Prime Video series.

In Tolkien’s books, these characters were almost completely wiped out during the War of Wrath, which ended the First Age of Middle-earth. The new Prime Video series will take place in the Second Age, with a group of orcs hidden underground and much smaller, but which will become an army in the future. In addition to these characters, we will also have the harfoot or the furry ones, a subrace of hobbits, without forgetting the iconic elves and dwarves (and humans), of which we have also been able to see some images.

The cast is led by Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, the one we knew as the Lady of Lothlórien, played by Cate Blanchett in the first 2001 film. The rest of the cast is completed by Markella Kavenagh, Benjamin Walker, Joseph Mawle, Lenny Henry, Sophia Nomvete, Simon Merrells, Robert Aramayo, Maxim Baldry and Charles Edwards.

old ways

In the new images, the orcs look somewhat similar to the first installments, and apparently, the makeup will still have a heavy weight. Let’s remember that Both “The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Return of the King” won Oscars for Best Makeup, largely for their work on the faces of Sauron and Saruman’s army of brutes. If the series follows suit, there may be another victory for traditional methods of CGI in Tolkien’s cinematic world.

IGN also spoke with Jaimie Wilson, head of the show’s prosthetics department. Wilson highlighted the passion creators JD Payne and Patrick McKay had for their work with orcs and their design. “They have a real passion for them, they love prosthetics and practical design and they felt the need to explore it”, it is stated. However, he also noted that they wanted these creatures to be “different” from previous orcs. “It seemed appropriate that her look was different, part of a wilder and more raw Second Age”, Wilson tells.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” It will be released on the Amazon platform on September 2nd.
