Netflix is developing a series adaptation of John Steinbeckis the 1952 novel East of Eden And Florence Pugh is meant to star in it. It is unknown who he will play, but there is no doubt that it will be a starring role.
The epic story is set in the Salinas Valley, California, in a period ranging from the Civil War to the end of the First World War. It is a sprawling and often brutal story that “follows the intertwined destinies of two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltonians, whose generations helplessly recall the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.”
Adam Trask came to California from the east “to farm and raise his family in the new rich land. But the birth of his twins, Cal and Aaron, brings his wife to the brink of insanity, and Adam is left alone to raise his boys to adulthood. A prosperous boy fed by the love of all those around him; the other grows in solitude shrouded in a mysterious darkness.
The limited series adaptation will explore “the novel’s themes of trauma and reparation; love and betrayal; duty and free will. The series will be an intimate portrait of the Trask family against the backdrop of enormous historical forces or, as Steinbeck put it, “the history of my country and my history”.
The limited series was written and produced by Zoe Kazanwhose grandfather, Elia Kazandirected the 1955 film adaptation of Steinbeck’s novel.
Kazan said in a statement: “I fell in love East of Eden when I first read it, in my teens. Since then, my dream has been to adapt Steinbeck’s novel, the great, vast three-generation ensemble of it. More than anything else, I wanted to give full expression to the novel’s surprising and singular anti-heroine, Cathy Ames. Florence Pugh is our dream Cathy; I can’t imagine a more thrilling actor to bring this character to life. Writing this limited series for the past couple of years has been the creative highlight of my life. I hope that with our Netflix partners Anonymous Content and Endeavor Content, we can do this material justice and shed new light on it for a 21st century audience. “
