Kevin Costner is set to direct an epic film project he is developing from the title Horizonand recently revealed that he is planning the project to consist of four separate films.
The project is staged at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema and will begin production at the end of August. Costner says it is planned as “four different films” and that “about every three months they will come out.”
He went on to explain to Variety that “They’re all different movies that all link together, so you’re watching a saga of these storylines happening.” It will be a huge production as she is looking to cast 170 talking roles in the films.
Horizon takes place over the course of 15 years in the western frontier settlement of America and focuses on both the settlers and the indigenous groups who first occupied the land.
Costner went on to talk about the story by saying, “It’s a really good story; it’s a difficult story. It really involves a lot of women, to be honest. There are a lot of men too, but women are really strong Horizon. It’s just them trying to get by every day in a world that was incredibly difficult. They often were [dragged] out in these places because that’s where the men wanted to go; women followed their men. They didn’t ask to be in these unstable and dangerous territories, and life wasn’t easy. I chose to make sure it was really obvious, that it wasn’t easy and how vulnerable people were. “
Horizon is Costner’s first directing project since the western Open field in 2003. He only directed two other films, which are The postman in 1997 and Dance with the wolves in 1990. I am happy to see Costner direct again and this will be a great feat for him with four films!
The project was originally billed as a “television movie of an event,” but Costner says “what [the studio does] it will really depend on them because things change very quickly in how people want to see things and what they want to do.
He goes on to say, “I’m happier because at some point on TV – where you can get your biggest audience – they’ll see it the way I wanted it to be seen. It will eventually be cut in [hour-long episodes] or 42 minutes, however the TV works. But their first viewing will be like four 2-hour and 45-minute films. And every three months, one will come out. If you’re interested in those characters, the hope is that you’ll really want to watch the next one, but it won’t be in one-hour segments. “
Costner will spend eight months filming the project and I’m thrilled! Can’t wait to see how it turns out! Costner is currently filming the fifth season of Yellowstone.
