Tesco shoppers are being warned of a new gift card scam.

More than 170 people have reported the scam, which emails customers claiming they have a chance to win a £ 500 gift card.

The email says: “You have been selected to join our loyalty program for free. It will only take you a minute to access this reward. “

To get one step closer to claiming the prize, the scam asks people to log into their Paypal account to confirm their personal information.

Action Fraud has posted advice for anyone concerned about the scam.



The Fraud Center said: “Your bank, or any other official organization, will not ask you to share personal information via email or SMS.

“If you need to verify that this is an authentic message, contact them directly.”

Action Fraud urged the British to report any emails that “seem suspicious”. [email protected]

In a tweet to 69,100 followers, he said: “Beware of fake Tesco emails about gift card giveaways.”

The company said: “We have received 172 reports about them so far.

“Report suspicious emails, even if you’re not sure it’s a scam, we can check it out.”

Phishing is a type of fraud in which the scammer sends an email pretending to be another person or company.

These emails usually contain links or attachments, which have software to retrieve login details and account information.

People can do a lot to avoid a scam, including blocking unwanted calls and messages.

Brits are advised to avoid giving personal or financial information to an applicant they did not expect.
