For the most part, fans seem pretty excited about Netflix’s live-action series adaptation Neil Gaiman’S The Sandman. The most recent trailer that was released presented the show as a beautifully crafted fantasy epic.
In the series: “There is another world that awaits us all when we close our eyes and sleep – a place called Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), shapes all our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held captive for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will forever change both the dream world and the waking world. To restore order, Dream must travel across different worlds and timelines to repair the mistakes he made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and enemies and meeting new entities, both cosmic and human, along the way.
Gaiman wanted to make sure this fit was correct. There have been several attempts at adaptation over the years The Sandman and in a recent interview with Total Film, Gaiman said he “didn’t think we’d always get here.” He had faith, though, and speaking of him targeting him for the series, he said:
“But I thought the important thing was to prevent negative versions from being produced. Once you create a shoddy version, you never go back to that one again. It may sound silly, but when I was 14 or 15, my favorite comic was Howard The Duck. Steve Gerber, Gene Colan, Frank Brunner, satire, madness, glory … I was so excited when I heard George Lucas was making a movie. And then A New Breed Of Hero [the 1986 movie’s alt-title] He came out. Howard The Duck has become a bad joke. I never wanted that to happen to Sandman and I’ve seen the scripts that would make it happen. “
In the end, however, Gaiman looks very happy and satisfied with the result. He has called the series “magic” but also says he may not be the “Sandman of your dreams”. He said:
“I can’t promise this is the Sandman of your dreams, but I can promise I’m proud of what we’ve done. I can say Stephen Fry as Gilbert is waiting for you, Boyd Holbrook as Corinthian, the killers … We can also put our weight on casting, because there are people who love Sandman and desperately want to be a part of it. Everyone is on Sandman because they love it. And it’s magical. “
The cast includes Tom Sturridge as a dream, Carlo Danza (game of Thrones) as Roderick Burgess, Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) such as The Corinthian, Patton Oswalt (AP Bio) as the voice of Matthew the Crow, Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The good place) like Death, Jenna Coleman (Doctor who) like Giovanna Costantino, Joely Richardson (Pinch / tuck) as Ethel Cripps, Vivienne Acheampong how Lucienne, and David Thewlis (the Harry Potter film) as John Dee.
The series was developed and produced by showrunner Gaiman Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey’s Anatomy), And David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Terminator: Dark Destiny, Foundation).
The man of sand will be released on August 5th on Netflix. Here is a new photo:
