The last two seasons of Doctor Who have been shrouded in controversy. Amid dwindling viewership, some pointed to the show’s first Black LGBTQ+ actor leading the show through crisis, while others said the series’ writing has become weaker in recent seasons.
Apart Ncuti GatwaAfter the criticism of , there was also negative reaction to the exit of the star of the series Millie Gibsonwith rumors claiming she was displaying “diva behaviour”.
Now Gibson has the chance to set the record straight by opening up to the “horrible” rumours. Speaking to The I Paper (via CB), Gibson reflected on her Doctor Who assignment, revealing that speculation that she had been fired for “diva” behavior on set was difficult to address, not only because it was false but she couldn’t even defend herself due to spoilers.
The actress explained: “I couldn’t say, ‘It’s a lie.’ [because] they’d say, “Well, they’re spoilers.” It was pretty hard to defend myself without ruining the show. I thought, “Oh, that’s horrible because it feels so real.”
“Oh, it was terrible. What was frustrating was the amount of people saying, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, that happened, man,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, it didn’t.’ [happened]but thank you.”
In early 2024, it was reported that Gibson had joined Doctor Who in the 2023 Christmas Special as companion Ruby Sunday, she would be replaced by Andor AND Jurassic world domination protagonist Varada Sethu for the subsequent seasons.
It was shocking news, especially since there was a lot of mystery surrounding the character. However, although it was announced that Gibson would be replaced, the reality was slightly different. Ruby chose to leave the TARDIS to be with her family, but remained part of the Doctor’s world, joining UNIT and appearing in the second season of Doctor Who along with Sethu, only in a less regular capacity.
Gibson explained that although it was difficult not to set the record straight at the time, he had the support of Gatwa who was dealing with his own headlines and backlash after being cast as the Doctor. “He’s had his time with this, and it’s just a matter of being able to try to rule that out,” Gibson said.
We have no idea what the future holds for us Doctor Whoso we’ll just have to wait and see. Do you hope the series returns? What changes do you think could be made to improve the show’s ratings?
