This week’s retro trailer is for the 1973 Robert Aldrich’s film The north emperorWhich is a gritty, raw and unforgettable slice of cinema that captures the desperate survival and clash the testaments of the America of the era of depression. This is one of my favorite films.
With Lee Marvin Like the legendary Hobo “a n. 1” e Ernest Borgnine Like Shack, the brutal director of the train determined to keep him out of his train, the film transforms the tracks into a battlefield of wit, resistance and willpower.
What makes him so compelling is his mixture of realism and myth rooted in the difficulties of the 1930s but increased by his duel almost mythical between freedom and authority. The performances are Awwesome, with Marvin’s fresh resilience and Borgnine’s terrifying ferocity creating one of the most compelling rivalries of his era.
What The north emperor It is worth watching is not only his fierce performances, but his exploration of American identity in a moment of struggle. It concerns pride, survival and the symbolic clash between individualism and oppressive control, themes that still resonate today.
The film is shot magnificently, with the Oregon railways that act as a background and battlefield, and the direction of Aldrich pushes every clash to the limit of violence and meaning.
It is part of the action, of the survival drama in part and partly allegory, all wrapped in a film that does not take sides of showing the cost of freedom.
For anyone who loves hard and uncompromising narration and electrical performances, this film is as high as one of the most unique and underestimated gems of the 70s.
