At the Locarno Film Festival, Jackie Chan I didn’t resist when he shared his thoughts on the state of Hollywood cinema today. The legend of the action told a crowded crowd that the great studies have lost contact with creativity, replacing the cinematographic passion with corporate priorities.
“I think the old films are better than today. At this moment, many great studies are not filmmakers, they are guys. And you can’t go further.
Speaking with the head of the Locarno Festival Jonah NazzaroChan has reflected on his ten -year career, from the beginning in Hong Kong cinema to his wildest stories of stunts and how he learned almost any job on a set: acting, direction, choreography of acrobatics, editing and more.
“In all of Asia, only two directors can do everything: writing, direction, acting, acrobatic coordination, the struggle of stunts and assembly. Only two. One is suspended, the second is Jackie Chan. And I am better because I know how to sing.”
Chan explained that singing was not just a lateral hobby. At the beginning of his career, he realized that he was constantly performing dangerous stunts was not sustainable.
“I can’t do it forever. It’s so dangerous. Whatever station I would go, they ask me how to give a punch and kick. I thought, what should I do? I should learn to sing. Then I started trying to learn to sing. I want to be the Asian Robert De Niro.”
At the beginning of the 2000s, Chan had become frustrated by Hollywood. He said he couldn’t connect with the American public and was tired of being offered weak scripts. He was ready to leave until a last bet didn’t change everything. That bet was Rush hour.
“Hour of the top. It has been the last test. If it is not successful, then I finish. I think the top hours have changed the culture.”
He also consolidated his goal of being “an intercultural bridge between the United States and China”.
Chan was in Locarno to receive the prestigious Pardo prize for the Festival career to achieve the career, with projections of his directing classics Project A. AND History of the police.
Even with all the awards, his words brought a clear message that Hollywood could have the money, but he is losing his heart.
