Zach Cregger He did it again and went completely in nightmare chaos mode. His new horror movie Weapons It is a delusional and impudent of thrill that manages to be frightening, fun, disturbing and strangely fun all at once.
Entering, I didn’t know exactly what to expect. I liked the trailers, but the cregger himself said they just scratched the surface of the story. He was not lying, what takes place here is something much strangest, wilder and more unpredictable than anything had mentioned those preview clips.
From the opening scenes, you have dropped into a mystery that makes itching to the brain. Seventeen children disappear from the same class at 2:17 without signs of struggle, few clues, no reason why.
As you can imagine, the families are desperate, the community is at the limit and you are right there with them, trying to put together what is happening. But Cregger does not allow you to put you at ease. Just when you think you understand it, the film pulls the carpet from below you, sending you spiral to another layer of madness.
The tone is fascinating because Weapons It walks a thin line between black terror and mischievous fun. Yes, it is dark, sometimes very dark, but it never seems overwhelming. Instead, he plays with you, joking a moment with his head and make you laugh in pure disbelief of others.
It is as if Cregger understands the exact point in which fear and laughter overlap and decides to set up a field there. You will scream, then re -meter and probably you will feel strange.
It helps the fact that the cast is shooting on all cylinders. Josh Brolin gravitas and grit holder, Julia Garner it is magnetic in every scene and Alden Ehrenreich AND Austin Abrams Add a little humor and ridiculous to chaos.
Amy Madigan It is the real scene of the scene, offering a performance that disturbing and unstoppably to die for. Everyone here seems fully engaged in the unbridled vision of cregger, which makes madness much more convincing.
Visually, Weapons Burn in your brain. Cregger creates some truly disturbing images, there are moments that will remain with you after leaving the theater. It is the type of horror that follows you at home, lurking in the back of your mind while you are trying to fall asleep. Yet, despite the nightmare fuel, it is impossible not to admire how much everything is composed. There is a real art for madness.
The end of the film is absolutely crackling in the best possible way. It is a gruesome, disgusting, fun and incredibly satisfactory ending. The way to arrive is a little tortuous, some moments feel deliberately tortuous, but when everything does clicks, the payoff is worth it.
The greatest success of Cregger here could be the way you play in tone. Very few filmmakers can balance pure fear with moments of acute and twisted humor without undermining the other. But Weapons It makes him feel effortlessly. It is bold, it is strange and is full of personality.
In the end, Weapons It is an unpredictable and ambitious genre of genre that shows that Zach Cregger is not just a horror marvel at a blow. This is an intelligent, disturbing and wildly fun cinema that knows how to tell great horror stories! It is worth watching this film on the big screen!
