The Marvel cinematographic universe has been a tangled network of timing, variants and multival madness for almost two decades. With the release of The Fantastic Four: First StepsThings have become a little more disconcerting.
Not only is the film set in an alternative reality, Earth-828 rather than the Primary Earth-616, but is also a full-blown piece. So when exactly does it take place? Director Matt Shakman He finally offered some answers.
During a recent chat with CinemaBlend, Shakman interrupted the thought process behind the single environment of the film. While watching Fantastic Four: first stepsYou may have noticed that there was a calendar or a mention mentioned. Shakman said:
“In terms of the year, we intentionally vague about it. But when we were organizing from the point of view of design, it was 1965. This was the year we used for clothing, for cars, for New York in terms of reference.
“And this is really due to the fact that we wanted to be in the middle of the decade in terms of, you know, things begin to change to get to several years 70 as they arrive at the end of the 1960s, and we didn’t want even too much 1950s. And so the early 60s have that.”
So, while the film does not explicitly indicate the year, all signs indicate 1965. The style, fashion, cars and the general atmosphere of retrofuturist were all anchored in that mid -1960s. But it wasn’t the only thing that modeled the aesthetics.
Shakman revealed that a great influence behind the gaze of Fantastic Four: first steps It was the 1964 world fair in New York City. Although it is not mentioned directly in the film, the event inspired the city’s architecture and retrofuturist technology.
“So solid in the middle, just a little after the world fair in New York City. Was it one of our milestones, which was,” and if the world fair outside in Queens was actually in the whole city? “You know, saucer -shaped buildings, monorotai, flying machines, all that idea.”
Now, with Avengers: Doomsday On the horizon and The Fantastic Four confirmed to join forces with the main heroes does the question become: how do these 1965 heroes fit into the modern MCU?
Multiveral journey? Decidedly. Travel through time? Not so much.
Shakman has closed all the theories on the team that jumps over time to reach the current Marvel time sequence. Their presence in Avengers: Doomsday It will be thanks to the Multiverse, not in Delorean.
