For years, Hollywood has worship his darkened and rooted restarts. But the times have changed and so they have tastes of the public. A recent Piramid video essay Superman.

Subsequently, other franchises found themselves hard at the “realistic” approach, transforming the comic book worlds and action sagas into moody characters studies.
But it was 20 years ago and, as Pyramid Peak explains, that tone no longer resonates the same way:

This shift is more than only stylistic. It is a reflection of our cultural mood. Then, the bad guys were symbolic. Today the problems seem personal and systemic. As peeled, future stories could even face the inequality of wealth frontally.
