Pixar is returning to Italy and this time it is through the eyes of a black cat with a debt with the feline crowd.
At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter fans surprised with the revelation of Cata brand new original film by Luca director Enrico Casarosaand producer Andrea Warren.
The announcement was made during what was supposed to be a preview of the next film HeliumBut he quickly transformed into a celebration of Pixar’s future slate.
By calling Annecy “the largest festival in the world”, Docter introduced Cat Like Pixar’s next Italian adventure, this time exploring the alleys, channels and secrets of Venice. The film should arrive in cinemas in the summer of 2027.
The story focuses on a black cat named Nero who lives in Venice, “a lover of partial music-hallmith his tail is-and the non-oscillating feline that is in debt with a head of the local feline mafia”.
Nero begins to ask if he lived the right lives and things take place when he is adopted reluctantly by Maya, a young street artist. What begins as a lack of correspondence could become the beginning of the real purpose of black, assuming that Venice Mysterious Underworld does not reach him first.
Visually, Gatto marks a new direction for Pixar. The study showed the first animation tests with a hand painted look, a mix of 2D plots and CG animation that has never been seen by the study. The Venetian setting is color, details and atmosphere, distinguishing cat from anything else in the Pixar catalog.
It’s nice to see that Pixar is finally experimenting with a new artistic style for animation. Their signature style felt stale and I said for a long time that Pixar needs to start mixing things.
Casarosa, who made its debut in directing with his feature film Lucais again drawing from his Italian heritage. While Luca captured the magic of a village on the sea combined by the sun, Cat tries to explore a more moody and more mysterious version of Italy through the eyes of a cat that could only be in his ninth life.
With a new pictorial style and an eccentric premise that involves bosses of the feline mafia and reluctant friendships, Pixar seems ready to provide something refreshing.
