Konami erases Retro Yu-Gi-Oh! Format events with the announcement of new rules

A great symbol “no” red on the Yu-Gi-Oh! Magician of Monster Time.

Konami really like to shoot the foot sometimes, right? In the event that Konami announced some changes to the magician format for the time for the weekend for the weekend Yu-gi-oh! TCG.

If you do not remember what is the format of the wizard of the time, it was announced during the Covid-19 pandemic as an official format that would allow the Duuelists to relive the retro formats and the announcement that the team has held official Wizard tournaments as secondary events in major events such as YCS tournaments that present various eras between favorite fans and Edison. Duels loved this! Then, last weekend it happened.

Apparently Konami has accidentally announced some key changes to the rules for magic events starting from the qualifications of the North American world championship that take place from 11 to 13 July.

In the FAQ section that asks for the rules for the events of the guided procedure of the time, it starts being very simple by explaining that these events “use the available cards, the prohibited and limited list, the rule regarding the design in the first round and the duel field of the format of the wizard of the selected time”. This is standard and not a problem. However, the next line threw the duelists in an impetus of Brooklyn Rage:

Starting from the Nawcq, the current game mechanics and the text of the current card will be used for events events.

Why is this a problem? Well, it’s just a problem for some retro formats including the aforementioned Capra and Edison formats extremely popular. Starting from the hat format, it is actually not really a problem. However, we must remember it Yu-gi-oh! It has been in circulation for over 25 years and as such the game mechanics have gone through some phases of evolution.

In previous formats there are mechanics such as priority that no longer exist, but have significantly defined formats. Furthermore, since then several cards that were very powerful during the day have been gave incorrect for nerils such as Goyo Guardian or brain control. These cards are mostly, if not all, of the main decks played in some of these formats, but with incorrect they now suck. Honestly, Yugituber Nyhmnim made one of the most complete faults of the changes to these formats and I included their video at the bottom of this article.

The entire reason behind the wizard and retro formats is to experience a different era of Yu-gi-oh!. These new rules ignore and fully pervert this premise. Now, duels cannot actually experience retro formats as they were in official events that really sucks. It is as if Konami had given us a ice cream cone and after we made a couple of licks, they pulled him out of the hands. But why? Why should Konami do it?

At the moment, I have heard three prevailing theories that I think they all contain water. I will briefly discuss each of what is less likely to very likely.

The less likely, but still plausible, reason is to prepare everything for an attempt to integrate the retro formats Duel Master. We know that in the past they have made events that have made pseudo-report formats. In addition, they recently made a handful of artisanal retro cards such as Trap Dustshoot.

I know that many duels, including myself, hoped that Konami implemented some features to allow us to play in retro formats and there is the possibility that they will implement it with these bastard versions and want a more uniform experience for veterans and new arrivals.

Subsequently, we have the theory that this is to push advanced Yu-gi-oh!. If the duels focus on the game of retro formats through Time Wizard, they are not buying new sets because they don’t need new cards.

This means that Konami makes less money because they seem to have a very embarrassing approach to the reprints lately with some successes (I am so excited that Android Magico has achieved a reprint in the next Legend battles: Monster Mayhem) and some missed.

I think this is perhaps a smaller piece than the puzzle than some love to think. Heck, Retro Package 1 It was really popular that led to a reprint of Retro package 2 who is launching this August. This is what makes things even more confused for me honestly since these packages are useless thanks to the new rules of the wizard of the time.

If you play in Sangan from Retro Package 1It will have its original text which is now not valid with the new rules. Therefore, there is no reason for me to buy Retro package 2 Since any incorrect card would be functionally unjustable (I’m not sure there are really cards Retro package 2 Impact from this honestly, but someone more experienced in it and retro formats could be able to explain it).

Honestly, Konami could have continued with new Retro packages And they would have been surprising with the community of the retro format. There are a handful of cards that do not have many prints and therefore they are not very cheap. This may have become a larger market for them. However, I upset too much on this point.

Finally, this is most likely the main reason for these new rules that Wizard Time and retro pre-oliti retro formats will send to the kingdom of the shadow: the judges. Yu-gi-oh! It has been in circulation for over 25 years now. There are many people involved who have not experienced older formats with their different mechanics and pre-erroneous cards.

This could be due to the fact that they are too young for playing or perhaps they have just collected the game in the last 10 years regardless of age. If the judges are not familiar with the rules of the retro format, it could lead to many disputes and problems.

If this is the main driving force behind the change, then it is disappointing because it shows a level of laziness that is simply sad. Konami could literally provide old copies of Yu-gi-oh! Regulations to be provided to the judges who offer magicians events. They could add pre-limited versions of cards Yu-gi-oh! Neurontheir official app. There are small things that could be done instead of polluting these beloved retro formats.

In the end, I don’t know what exactly the final result of these rules will be. My best hypothesis is that participation in these secondary events will decrease significantly. There is a part of me who thinks it is Konami’s goal so that they can justify the interruption of the events of the Wizard of the time (at least the pre-Hat ones)), but I don’t buy it completely.

Having said that, I think that the events managed by the community will become much more popular, which once again confuses me because it means that Konami is actively making the choice to lose easy money. I really hope that Konami will be soda and these new rules return.
