The fans made themselves hard for Andy Serkis’ performance as Kino Loy Andor The first season, the boss of the floor became Rebel Sparkplug who delivered a hell of a stimulating monologue. But apparently, Kino’s story is just where it is over.
In a Nterview with the Hollywood journalist, Andor Creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy Open on why Serkis did not show up in season 2, and it is a question of preserving the power of the character’s ending. Gilroy said:
“Andy dropped the microphone, friend. What I will do will be better than what we have done? Everything he does is reduce that moment to a minimum.
“I knew many people spoke if we had a way [bringing him back]. But I didn’t want to have that type of random environment. “
That moment of “Mic Drop” Gilroy refers to episode 10 of season 1, when Kino gathers the prisoners of Narkina 5 to get up and escape. It is an emotional span because Kino is a man who had resigned to survive his sentence, finds something bigger for which to fight.
But, just as freedom is at hand, we learn that it cannot swim. The last one we see of him has remained behind in chaos while the prisoners jump in the ocean.
It is a brutal and poetic ending, that Gilroy feels clearly it is worth preserving. As far as we would like to know what happened after with the character, the final scene of Kino hits because we don’t have the closure. Pulling it back in the fold just to tie an arc to things risks underestimating the emotional punch of that scene.
