Never from Superman Trailer fell, the DC fans tried to understand exactly what Frank GrilloRick Flag Sr. is doing in the new DCU and in particular which title holds. Is it the defense secretary? Are Argus running? Or both?
The confusion hit some fans during a moment in the trailer, Lois Lane says that the defense secretary will keep an eye on Superman, and the next shot shows the flag of Grillo Sr.
This led many to take on that he was playing the secretary of defense in the DCU. But then Pacifier The teaser of season 2 has landed and revealed that Flag Sr. now manages Argus. So … what is it?
Fortunately, James Gunn I just intervened to solve the debate. A fan asked Gunn on threads:
“Rick Flag Senior is the defense secretary or is it precisely the way the trailer has been modified, I thought he was managing Argus now?”
Gunn clearly replied:
“He is the chief of Argus. But he works next to the Defense Secretary General Mori.”
Therefore, Flag Sr. is responsible for Argus (advanced research group that unites super-human), but works closely with high-level government officials such as General Mori.
Frank Grillo has already made his animated debut in the role with Commandos creatures, and this character is clearly set as a great connective thread in the new Gunn DCU.
In November 2024, Grillo offered his perspective in the place of Flag Sr. In the DCU, drawing comparisons with another family face from a different cinematographic universe:
“I get some atmosphere of Sam Jackson. It is that kind of things in which it can pass a little, as in Superman, and have a fundamental and fundamental role, and then a greater role, certainly, in Peacemaker, a very crucial role, and then he is the leader of the Team of Creatures Commandos.”
He added:
“So, yes, I don’t know what the future reserves, but I think Rick Flag is a bit of Argus’s head, like the MCU with Jackson. I want to say, you never know. It’s a bit infinite.”
Flag Sr. is clearly here to stay, and it seems that he will present himself exactly where Gunn must be and the stories of the DCU.
