In 1979, Steve Martin I did something slightly different to promote his classic 1979 comedy The jerk. In a special trailer labeled “only for the theater owners”, Martin fixes the camera directly and offers a tailor -made shot for theatrical operators, telling them exactly what they wanted to hear.
Of course, everything was intertwined by Martin’s absurd humor. It ensures theater owners that this trailer should not be shown to the “general public”. But he was publicly shown to the public before he disappeared.
It would have been the end, if it weren’t for the people of Shout! Studios, who discovered this dark promotional gem and included it in their blue-ray release of The jerk. As noted:
“While the copies of this trailer exist in various archives, it is not available for online streaming … until now. Thanks to Shout Factory for putting it in their recent Blu-Ray release of the classic film.”
It is a rare slice of film marketing history of the fourth wall. This is very funny and I hope you like it!
