There is a brand new Ghost in the Shell Anime on the horizon, and promises to be one of the most visually distinct and creatively ambitious iterations that we have still seen.
Supported by the science of the Saru animation house, which is better known for Dandadan AND Scott Pilgrim DecollaThis imminent series marks a new fantastic chapter in the Masamune Shirow Cyberpunk saga. And now, the original creator offers thoughts on the project.
With The ghost in the shell Debutto in 2026, Shirow shared a candid message with fans who reflect on the evolution of the franchise and what this last anime means.
“As for anime adaptation, this new The Ghost in the Shell marks the fourth version that follows those of Oshii, Kamiyama and Kise,” Shirow started in a special comment linked to the release of the show teaser.
“Alternatively, if you separate Ghost in The Shell and Innocence, we classify the SAC series in Seasons 1, 2 and Solid State Society, Divide presents itself in its series together with the new film and Sac_2045 uniforms in seasons 1 and 2, this would be the tenth adaptation in general.”
Ghost in the Shell He had a rather wild race, jumping between the temporal lines, the visual styles and whole philosophical tones, and this next is a complete generational change, according to Shirow.
“Considering the change in production personnel, you could even consider this first episode of a second generation,” he added. “The original manga is quite old, so I ask for your understanding on that point (sorry!). Having said that, I sincerely hope that this will again be a pleasant visual experience in some form.”
It is a pleasantly honest note, especially by a creator whose work has contributed to redefining what Cyberpunk meant in the anime and beyond.
While Shirow seems aware of the heavy legacy behind his manga, there is also the trust that science will live up to the challenge to do Ghost in the Shell feel new again.
The details are still in compress, no cast has been announced and the exact release date remains unconfirmed. What we know is that the new series is led by the director for the first time Moko-chanwith Toh enjoe on scripts e Shuhei Handa Manage both the designs of the characters and the main direction of animation. Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha and Production IG are producing.
From the short movie we saw, this could be the most manga-fithful visual approach that the franchise attempted. This is a big problem for long -standing fans who wanted to see a version that approaches the tone and original aesthetics of Shirow, without sacrificing the foresight edge that is always called Ghost in the shell.
I have been a fan of this series since I saw the first anime movie when I was in high school. Some of the other projects have been affected and lose in these years, but this too can’t wait.
