Charlie Cox on Daredevil: Born Again- “We tried to remain open” despite the first doubts of the script

Despite being the star of the series of superheroes fan fans of Netflix Daredevil, Charlie Cox He was among the fans who believed that his return to the character was not in the cards.

Even after the head of Marvel Kevin Feige He called him in 2020 to talk about Daredevil’s place in the MCU, Cox really believed that he would only return to make a cameo or two.

But he says his co-protagonist, Vincent d’Onofriowho plays Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, in the franchise, has never given up on hope and has always believed they would return to the screen.

Now we are a few weeks from seeing their follow-up series, Daredevil: born againBut it was a long way to get here. The return of the character was reported in 2020, right in the middle of global pandemic, which closed Hollywood and put all the productions on the ground.

So, once things reopen, there were strikes to do and a complete review of the series took place apart from production.

New writers have been hired and the show has headed in a new direction. Speaking of how we felt half the face, COX explained to GQ:

“The thought was, well, we don’t want to do the same thing. We did it, “says Cox. Although Cox and D’Onofrio both agreed to return, it has been reported that the showrunners initially have refused many other characters, drawing conflicting reactions from the fans.

“Cox, for his part, says he started to have doubts at the beginning of production. “Vincent and I was not both convinced of 100 % of what we were doing at that moment was the right path, but we are both good soldiers and professionals and we were trying to have an open mentality.”

In May 2023, with six episodes already largely fired, the Writers Guild of America shocked, stopping production on the show.

“The strike of the writers took place, then the strike of the actors, who gave the producers the opportunity to look at our episodes and decide that it did not work completely,” says Cox. Once again, he received a threatening phone call from Marvel – this time to say that he would not return to work as expected.

But rather than canceling the project, Marvel’s leaders have replaced Born againShowrunner, Matt Corman AND Chris ordwith Dario Scardapanewho had worked on Netflix The punisher.

Scardapane, says Cox, reworked the series, adding three completely new episodes and wrote additional scenes to reconnect the previously shot in a coherent set.

The new showrunners have also taken most of the original cast and crew, including Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson) e Phil SilveraThe stuntman coordinator behind the famous action sequences of the original.

“We made it known that we were not happy, and the great bosses, in particular Kevin [Feige]He listened to us, “D’Onofrio told me. The result, says Cox, “feels much more in line with the type of things we have done in Netflix”.

COX is fast in saying that it has no bad will towards the initial creative team Born againBut “in a bizarre turn of fate, the strikes that were so terrible for so many people in the sector ended up being the best thing that happened for our particular show”.

As for the fact that he believes that Daredevil should be part of the largest Marvel community, Cox says: “I think it’s more possible of how much it has never been, yes,” says Cox.

“I would like to be in one of the Avengers Movies or another Spider-manor something like that. For a couple of reasons. One, because over the years I have become a fan of the character, and strangely, for the good of the character, I feel as if it would be really nice for him to get that type of update. “

The second reason is smaller, more personal: “I would also like to do what it would do for my chances of obtaining other cinematographic roles”.

I think it is unanimously that only from Daredevil’s Netflix seasons alone, fans are happy to welcome Charlie Cox to the Avengers family. I hope the rewrites were just what this character needed to bring it together with a plot that deserves. I can’t wait to verify it!

Daredevil: born again It is scheduled for the first on Disney+ March 4th.
