Mel Gibson has an impressive track record as a director, after making great cinematographic films such as Brave heart, ApocalypttoAND Hacksaw Ridge. These films show the incredible filmmakers for narration.
However, his latest film, Flight riskIt is no place near the same League of those other films. Instead of offering a compelling and finely made thriller, Gibson offers a foolish lap reduced.
The film manages to be both fun and absolutely ridiculous – and I have to admit it, I had fun watching it, even if probably not for the reasons why the filmmakers meant.
I saw the risk of flight with a group of friends, who is really the only way to watch this movie. From the beginning, we were unable to stop jokes about what was happening on the screen.
The flight risk has become an involuntary comedy for us, and it was all the better for this. The characters of the film have just made a terrible decision after another.
One of the most ridiculous creative decisions they took was giving Mark Wahlberg a bald head. I don’t know who he thought it was a good idea, but it was so distracted that it became a racing joke during the film.
He seemed so bad that he made any attempt to take his performance seriously derailly derail. Whenever he was on the screen, I couldn’t stop fixing his jumped calm head.
They should have left Wahlberg keep their hair! He would have made things less distract.
The story is a fairly standard thriller: Wahlberg plays a pilot in charge of transporting an air marshal (Michelle Dockery) and a government witness (Topher Grace) through the Alaska Wilderness. Of course, things quickly escape control as when we learn that Wahlberg is actually a successful man assumed to eliminate the witness.
It seems that it could be a tense and engaging film, but running, the plot is full of so many stupid and heartbreaking decisions. The story asks you to suspend the disbelief too often and you cannot help but start laughing at the absurdity of everything.
What saved the film from being a total disaster was Topher Grace. Of the three protagonists, it was easily the funniest to look at.
While Wahlberg and Dockery seemed weighed down by the awkward script, Grace brought a level of energy and charm that made his character stand out. It seemed that he was the only one on the joke, leaning on absurdity and having fun.
Grace rests on chaos and brings a spark so necessary to the film. He is clearly having fun with his role and that fun translates into the public. Whenever it was on the screen, the film became only a little more bearable.
The flight risk is not a good film, but with the right group of friends, it becomes a fun shared experience.
If you are looking for a movie to sit and have fun with some friends who love cinema, that’s all.
Sometimes, this is the best type of cinema night: where the jokes you make on the film are better than the film itself. And in this sense, the flight risk offers.
