Charlie Cox he had a fantastic run as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, in the MCU delivering a strong performance that earned him a devoted fan base and he returned to the role in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again Series.
But it looks like the actor also has his eyes on a darker, messier challenge… in the DC Universe. During a recent Fan Expo panel in San Francisco, Cox, along with his Daredevil: Born Again co-star Wilson Bethelopen about his dream role…the Joker.
Yes, Cox wants to take on the role of arguably one of the most iconic and demanding characters in all of comic book history.
When discussion turned to DC roles he’d like to play, Cox acknowledged the burden of stepping into the shoes of Gotham’s most infamous villain. He shared:
“I wouldn’t take it based on the actors you have in the past because they are so brilliant. I was thinking, like the Joker he would be very funny.
“If I could find a way to do something… you know, I mean, Heath Ledger, for me, nailed that part, obviously. If I could find a new interpretation somehow, that would be nice. “
The Joker has had an incredible cinematic history since Cesar Romeroflamboyant and funny antics a Jack Nicholsondevilish charm. Then there’s Ledger’s haunting, incredible performance, Jared Leto’s disappointment, and Joaquin Phoenix’s raw vulnerability.
The Joker has been reinvented in ways that have continually changed what a villain can be. But Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight This remains a point of reference for the character.
I wonder how Cox would have handled this character if he had been cast in the role. In his hands, the character could take on new dimensions, perhaps one rooted in the subtle balance of light and dark like his Daredevil character, but a little more edgy.
I don’t know, Cox doesn’t stand out as an actor who would fit the role of Joker, but I’d still be open and curious to see what he brought to the role.
For now, Cox’s focus remains on the Marvel universe, where he is set to reprise his role in Daredevil: Born Againwhich promises a darker, grittier take on the character, reflecting the mature themes of the original Netflix series, while integrating Cox’s recent appearances into the wider MCU.
What do you think of Cox as the Joker? Do you see it?
