Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew brought fans a fresh, fun, self-contained adventure, but still managed to weave a thin thread into the galaxy’s larger lore.
Creators Jon Watts AND Christopher Ford recently confirmed that the series has ties to the High Republic era, particularly through the “Great Work” concept mentioned by the citizens of At Attin.
Speaking to Collider after the finale, Watts explained: “The Real Good Guys. I didn’t want to go completely into that part of the universe and [have the] the people who work there say, “That’s just how it is!”
“But it should feel connected. So even if it’s not literally connected, it’s still an idea that existed in the galaxy at a certain time of, “We can do better.” We can do great things.’”
For those unfamiliar with High Republic lore, the phrase “Great Work” is a nod to Chancellor Lina Soh’s ambitious projects, such as the Starlight Beacon, designed to unite the galaxy during this burgeoning era.
Ford spoke more about the connection, saying, “If they’re not directly related, they’re from the same place. The idea of what that originally meant, because they are isolated, may have evolved over time.
In At Attin, the Great Work takes on a more hidden meaning, which was ultimately revealed to be the production of the Old Republic credits. The isolated planet, surrounded by the Wall, has long been cut off from galactic events.
Its citizens, unaware of the Galactic Civil War or even the destruction of Alderaan, live in a bubble of outdated ideals. This detachment creates a fascinating and dynamic story with the people of At Attin that unwittingly retains an echo of Soh’s ethos, even as its original intent has changed over the generations.
Unlike many others Star Wars shows, Skeleton crew avoids a heavy reliance on cameos or direct ties to other similar stories The Mandalorian OR Ahsoka. Instead, it carves its own story and path while peppering it with interesting and subtle Easter eggs.
This subtle connection to the High Republic leaves room for some exciting possibilities to play with in the future. I would love to see At Attin’s unique history or its ties to the High Republic explored further.
