SEVERANCE creator Dan Erickson says reading fan theories online can be so overwhelming

The psychological thriller from Apple TV+ Separation has already given fans so much to think about, with the first season asking questions about the Lumon company, its origins, its creator, the building’s strange corridors that include lambs, violent artwork, and mysterious masked people.

We want to know the unfired employees and their intentions, and we need to know what will happen to Mark and his colleagues after that stupid season finale.

Everything is about to be answered and more questions will arise, no doubt, but some fans are out there theorizing their own endings, and the show’s creator finds that intriguing.

During a recent interview with SFX magazine, Dan Erickson explained: “Ben and I worked a lot before the show came out, before we even started production on the first season, [when it comes to] understand many answers.

“So there’s a lot more that we know, that we knew all along, that we haven’t revealed on screen – and some of it we may never reveal on screen. People can continue to have their own ideas about it and that’s part of what makes it [Severance] special.

“I feel like I can read the theories, enjoy them, and get excited about the creativity that people bring to them. Sometimes, though, I have to stop.

“Sometimes it’s overwhelming to see them all and be like, ‘Oh, I wish we could [go in] all these different directions,’ but they’re so fun to read.”

I’m sure it would be difficult to go down each of the rabbit holes, knowing you have a different plan mapped out. But from what I’ve seen so far, I trust that Erickson will tell us a great story, whether we see it coming or not.

In the 10-episode second season, Mark (Adam Scott) and his friends discover the terrible consequences of messing with the severance barrier, leading them further down the rabbit hole.

In addition to Scott, the series stars Britt Lower, Tramell Tillmann, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachmann, Giovanni Turturro, Christopher Walken, Patricia Arquette and a new regular series Sarah Bock.

Separation returns to Apple TV+ this Friday, January 17.
