As previously reported, the upcoming Marvel animated series Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man it won’t take place in the familiar MCU timeline.
Showrunner Jeff Trammell recently spoke about creativity again, offering more insight into why they wanted to set the show in an alternate reality, explaining that this gave the creative team the freedom to tell fresh, original stories.
Trammell, speaking to Animation Magazine, explained: “I’m a huge fan of the MCU Spider-Man films, but if our show existed in the main MCU timeline, we would be severely limited in the kinds of stories we could and would want to tell. They have a rather short shelf life.
“Setting in a twin timeline, one universe further on, allows us a little more freedom and helps us tell stories that don’t necessarily have to follow a familiar path.”
This departure from Earth-616 opens up a world where Peter Parker’s mentor is Norman Osborn rather than Tony Stark and where Spider-Man never attended Midtown High.
These changes, Trammell said, are designed to explore a more nuanced representation of the web-slinger’s journey.
He said: “One of the biggest things we wanted from the series was to show not only Spidey at his peak, but also his worst moments. He has his fair share of victories but also experiences some big defeats, which hopefully it will make a better character.” skilled hero in the long run.
The showrunner also teased how the alternate universe will shake up Peter Parker’s relationships.
He shared, “Peter Parker has many friends over the years, but Peter and Nico Minoru as best friends? This is new, this is unique, and it immediately changes your perception of his world, because it changes your perception of Peter too. The same goes for Harry and Norman Osborn, Lonnie Lincoln and so on.
By reinventing these characters that fans might recognize, Trammell hopes to find a balance between familiarity and surprise:
He said: “These are characters you may know but not necessarily ones you’re familiar with, which, again, allows us to go down a familiar path but in a completely unexpected way.”
I like that the series is set in a completely different corner of the Marvel universe, and I’d actually like to see them do more. Not everything has to be connected to the main plot.
Trammell also addressed the creative vision behind the series’ visual style, which draws heavily from Spider-Man’s comic book roots.
“Looking at John Romita and Steve Ditko as inspiration, and then being able to modernize that style thanks to artists like our lead character designer, Leo Romero, allowed us to really plant our flag in a style that feels like a heartwarming comic .”
The show also brought in acclaimed comic book artists to shape its visual look. Trammell said, “In addition to leaning on classic Spidey comics, we have also been fortunate to work with many artists working in comics today, including Chris Samnee, Paolo Rivera, and Ethan Young, to name a few.”
Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will debut on Disney+ on January 29, 2025.
