Sleeping the first night saved my life

I’ll tell you a story I never imagined I’d share one day. A story that begins as a romantic comedy scenario and ends with a life lesson.
Spoiler alert: going to bed the first night literally saved my life.

An evening like no other

It all started on a Friday evening, after an exhausting week 3 years ago, I was 34 years old at the time I was single, much to my mother’s dismay. Personally I was completely fine with it. I had lots of friends, lovers, a professional situation that allowed me to be financially independent, in short, everything in my life was going pretty well!

That evening, as I said, I ended a long week and wanted to let go. So I joined some friends at a bar. When I go to order a drink at the bar, I find myself next to a handsome guy and we start a conversation in a completely natural way. At the same time, the wait was a bit long so it was quite easy to find an excuse to complain a bit! We each go our own way, but I regularly look in his direction and notice that he is doing the same.

One of my friends suggests I go talk to him, which I do, but not without a bit of stress. We talk for 2 hours non-stop!

He was funny, charming and had this way of asking questions that made me feel unique. In short, around 11.30pm, I found myself accepting his invitation to have a drink at his house. The rest might have been sadly banal but wait a bit.

The moment everything changed

Obviously the evening was going great. We laughed, we shared stories, we drank a glass of wine again and what was supposed to happen happened. I got along well with him, he was as kind as he was thoughtful and I really wanted him!

We started kissing passionately. I’m not painting you a picture, but our actions have become increasingly evil.

It was then that, while caressing my breast, he suddenly stopped. He placed his hand firmly on my left breast, his gaze changed and he said to me, with a seriousness that I didn’t expect : “I think I feel something. A ball. You really should get it checked out. »

“I think I hear something.” A ball. You really should get it checked out. »

Um… sorry? We were in the middle of a romantic moment, and then it turned into Doctor House.

The extraordinary nurse

This guy was a nurse. YES, nurse. And he was serious. He took the time to calmly explain to me why this small lump he felt could be a worrying sign. I was a little upset, but he was so kind that I promised to make an appointment with my doctor.

Even though I was upset, we had a beautiful night of love.

The following Monday I went to my gynecologist who ordered a mammogram. And you know what? He was right. This small lump was breast cancer, lucky for me, it was detected at an early stage. The kind of detection that saves your life. I then followed the classic treatments of chemotherapy and then radiotherapy: 12 months of a dark struggle.

My guardian angel

Today I am on the road to recovery and I feel great! And I consider this guy a guardian angel who crossed my path at the right time. He had tried to check up on me a few days after we met, but then I was overcome with sadness and fear after learning about my illness and didn’t respond to his messages.

After a few months I finally wanted to say thank you. It arrived within an hour of my message.

We are no longer lovers but he has become my friend.

The importance of prevention

I’m not saying that sleeping the first night is a method of medical prevention (don’t make me say something I didn’t say!), but this experience has taught me that sometimes we have to let ourselves be surprised by life. And, above all, listen to the signals, whether they come from our body or from an unlikely encounter.

That evening, breaking my rule of never having sex on the first night, I ran into an amazing guy who not only knew what he was talking about but more importantly had the courage to speak up even at a time when few would. I’ve been lucky, it must be said, so my only advice is not to wait until you have pain, not to feel weak or tired, to do the tests regularly.

Learn self-examination, it can save your life, not everyone has a sexy nurse on hand!
