Josh Gad is working hard to get us to Spaceballs 2the sequel to the 1987 classic, Spaceballs. Gad is attached to write, produce and star in the film. He worked on the screenplay with Benji Samit AND Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu), Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar) is up for the helm, and has the writer and director of the original film, Mel Brooks supporting everything. But he had to lay the groundwork with Brooks during his introductory meeting.
Gad opened up about his nerve-wracking encounter with Brooks during a recent appearance on Let’s talk off camera podcast, where he revealed he had to explain the latest one Star Wars episodes when he presents his interpretation of the sequel to the beloved parody.
“Mel is incredibly involved. I’ll share a funny story that I haven’t shared yet. When we presented him with the original idea of what we wanted to do with the film, at first he said, “I’m just telling you now, I want you to really go into detail because I don’t know much about it” the new Star Wars movie.” And I said, ‘okay.'”
Gad said he pitched Brooks for “40 minutes,” adding:
“It’s literally like I’m a combat veteran going to war in front of a person. I’m sweating, I’m getting into every line, every line, every comedic scene, every reveal. I paint it all and talk about how this speaks to a certain Star Wars moment, etc.
“Then there’s silence and finally he says, ‘Wow. Josh, you really seem to have your finger on the pulse!’ This is the greatest compliment I could have ever received, even though there is no context for this for Mel. He really trusted everything I had to say.
Inspired by George Lucas’ original Star Wars trilogy, Spaceballs followed the titular planet’s president Skroob (Brooks) as he orders the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Princess Wasp (Dafne Zuniga) in exchange for the air supply of its oxygen-rich planet Druidia. Renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullmann) comes to the rescue with his half-man, half-dog partner Barf (Giovanni Caramella).
Gad previously spoke about the script, saying it’s “the funniest and best thing [he’s] ever worked.”
Stay tuned for updates as the film heads towards production.
