Director David Finchercelebrated for his dark and psychologically intense films such as View, ZodiacAND Gone girlhe once had the amazing opportunity to direct a Harry Potter movie!
The project obviously never materialized, and this was due to creative differences between Fincher and Warner Bros.
In a recent interview with Variety, Fincher revealed: “I was asked to come in and talk to them about how I was going to do it Harry Potter. I remember saying, “I just don’t want to make it the clean Hollywood version.”
“I want to make something that feels more like me and Withnail, and I want it to be a little creepy.”
As might be expected, this proposal was not in line with Warner Bros.’ vision for the family fantasy franchise. The studio had a more traditional tone in mind, as Fincher explained:
“They were like, ‘We want it Tom Brown’s School Days by means of Oliver.’”
Given Fincher’s interest in exploring the darker corners of humanity, it’s easy to imagine his take on JK Rowling’s wizarding world as something very different from what fans ultimately saw in the films.
While his directorial style might have been unusual for the wizarding world, it’s interesting to consider how Fincher’s atmospheric storytelling might have redefined Hogwarts. I actually would have loved to see a Harry Potter movie directed by Fincher!
Fincher recently directed The killera sharp thriller starring Michael Fassbender like a methodical killer. As for the future, rumors are circulating that Fincher will direct an English-language spinoff of the Netflix series. Squid game.
While nothing official has been officially announced, the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyukexpressed enthusiasm for the possibility: “If he really were to do the spin-off of Squid gamePersonally, as a fan, I’m very excited to see what happens.
Even if we never see David Fincher’s vision Harry Potterthe idea of its disturbing and unusual take on Hogwarts adds a fascinating “what if” scenario to think about.
