THE John Wick the universe is expanding with Dancera spin-off set in the same dark criminal world as the franchise.
The film is the protagonist Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, and promises to give fans a new perspective on the world of assassins while carving out her own identity.
In a recent interview with Collider, de Armas shared insights on how Dancer balances its connection to the main franchise while displaying a distinctly different character and style.
Unlike Keanu Reeves’ John Wickthe character Eve Macarro brings a new energy and unique approach to the action. De Armas explained how she focused on making Eva her character:
“I think there are some distinctive traits in the fighting style John Wickand the things he does are very particular to him.
“But because in this movie we see through Eve’s eyes the background of John’s training, and how these assassins and dancers, how these people become these assassins, there are some little details that are the same, but Eve Macarro is Eva Macarro It’s not John Wick.”
As we’ve come to expect from the John Wick films, the action choreography plays a key role in maintaining the continuity of the universe. At the same time, de Armas and the stunt team adapted Eve’s fighting style to reflect her background as a dancer.
“Through the training process and rehearsals, we built these fights and tailored them to the things I would do best.
“I was really good at kicking, and also because I’m a ‘ballerina’, I should be good at kicking; I was really good at close combat, like with knives and stuff like that.
This process helped de Armas refine her physical performance and also shape Eve’s personality and identity. The actress said:
“Little by little, I was trying to learn about myself in this kind of world, and then even the stunt team and the professionals saw the best things I could do. So, along the way, we found my style.”
Set between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum AND Chapter 4, Dancer dives deeper into the Ruska Roma tradition that shaped both Eve and John Wick.
The film follows Eve as she seeks revenge for her father’s murder, and familiar faces from the series will make an appearance, including Keanu Reeves as John Wick, Ian McShane as Winston Scott, and Lance Reddick like Charon.
Like the future of John Wick the franchise remains unclear with questions about potential John Wick: Chapter 5 and spin-offs such as the alleged Caine-centric film, Dancer is the next installment that fans can look forward to.
Dancer will be released in theaters on June 6, 2025.
