The new year brings with it new public domain content, allowing both creators and fans to freely use iconic works that were once protected by copyright protections. Many of these will most likely be turned into low-budget, dumb, cheap horror films.
In 2025, beloved characters like Popeye and more of Mickey Mouse enter the public domain, marking a pivotal moment for pop culture enthusiasts.
Last year, Mickey and Minnie Mouse entered the public domain with their Disney debut The steamboat Willie (1928), 95 years after the release of the animated short.
However, key elements such as Mickey’s iconic white gloves were not included – they did not appear until 1929. Now, with the copyright expiration of Mickey’s talking debut in The Carnival boy and 11 more shorts, white gloves are officially free for public use.
This broadens the scope of how Mickey Mouse can be incorporated into new projects and creative endeavors.
Joining Mickey is Popeye, the spinach-loving sailor who made his first appearance in EC Segar Thimble Theater comic “Gobs of Work”. As Popeye enters the public domain, this iconic character is sure to inspire a new wave of stories, adaptations, and fan creations.
Also, Walt Disney’s first Silly symphony short, The Skeleton Dance (1929), directed by Walt Disney and animated by Ub Iwerksis now also available for free use. This is a disturbing, funny, timeless classic that some people are sure to ruin.
In addition to the animation, many other works from 1929 and sound recordings from 1924 will enter the public domain in 2025. Literary classics such as those by Ernest Hemingway A farewell to arms and Agatha Christie’s The mystery of the seven quadrants are now available for creative reinterpretation.
The mechanisms of the public domain have their roots in the intellectual property clause of the U.S. Constitution, which aims to “promote the progress of science and the useful arts.”
Copyright protections last for a defined period, and when they expire, works enter the public domain, allowing anyone to develop them freely.
Looking ahead, 2026 will bring even more iconic additions, including Betty Boop, Mickey’s faithful companion Pluto, Clarabelle Cow and Nancy Drew.
