As 2024 comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the incredible stories and unforgettable characters that have graced our television screens throughout the year.
Television continues to reach new heights, offering a wide range of genres and narratives that have fascinated me. From thrilling adaptations of beloved video games and novels to heartfelt comedies, animated projects and intense dramas, this year’s lineup of shows offered something for every type of viewer.
I’m always looking for shows that push boundaries, offer compelling narratives, and leave a lasting impression. This year we were treated to great storytelling, incredible performances, and moments I loved talking about with friends.
Whether it was an animated masterpiece, a gripping drama, or a show that simply made me laugh, these series stood out as the best of what 2024 had to offer.
Here are my 10 favorite TV shows of the year. The ones that resonated with me personally, entertained me in ways I didn’t expect, and made me fall in love with the art of storytelling all over again. Let’s dive in!
1. Arcane
In my opinion, Arcane is the best video game project, live-action or animated, ever made. The show told such an incredible story with stunning imagery and emotional depth.
Each episode delivered pure greatness, blending epic action with heartfelt character development. The dynamic between sisters Jinx and Vi, against the backdrop of tensions between Piltover and Zaun, created a compelling and emotional roller coaster.
2. The Penguin
This DC series took me on a crazy journey into the underworld of Gotham City and I didn’t expect it to be this good. Honestly, I thought it was even better than The Batman movie!
Colin Farrell delivers an incredible performance as Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, as he fights for control of Gotham’s criminal empire in the power vacuum left after Carmine Falcone’s death.
With its gory atmosphere, intense power plays, and compelling character dynamics, this show sets a new standard for DC storytelling.
3. Relapse
This is easily one of the best live-action video game adaptations ever made. It perfectly captures the bizarre and irradiated world of gaming while telling a deeply compelling story. The contrast between the retro-futuristic optimism of pre-apocalyptic America and the brutal reality of post-apocalyptic life is fascinating. The world building is immaculate and the mix of dark humor and pulse-pounding tension kept me captivated from start to finish.
4. Shogun
This samurai epic, based on the novel by James Clavell, is an incredible viewing experience. The attention to detail in bringing this story to life is astonishing.
The 1600s Japanese setting, political intrigue and cultural clashes between Lord Toranaga, John Blackthorne and Toda Mariko create a compelling narrative.
Each episode felt like a beautifully crafted work of art, and Hiroyuki Sanada’s performance as Toranaga was particularly powerful.
5. Nobody wants it
This romantic comedy delivers pure joy in every episode. Kristen Bell AND Adam Brody shine as Joanne and Noah, an agnostic podcast host and recovering rabbi, whose unlikely love story is both hilarious and heartwarming.
The show’s mix of quirky humor and genuine emotional depth made it one of my favorite feel-good series of the year.
6. Shrinkage
This show is like comfort food for the soul. Jason Segel plays a grieving therapist who begins breaking the rules in his practice, leading to heartfelt and often hilarious consequences.
Harrison FordThe portrayal of Paul, a trained therapist dealing with Parkinson’s disease, adds depth to the story and humanity. The show’s ability to balance humor and emotion makes it extraordinary for me.
7. Creature commando
James Gunn absolutely knocked it out of the park with Commando of creatures! This animated series about a team of incarcerated monsters sent on deadly missions is a blast.
The crazy character dynamics and Gunn’s signature mix of heart and humor make it an exciting and entertaining watch. I can’t wait to see where this wild ride takes us.
8. Earthman
The ruthless madness of the oil industry and all the factors that go into running it are fascinating to me, and Landman offers an exciting and frustrating look at this world.
Billy Bob Thornton is phenomenal as he tackles the upstairs-to-downstairs dynamic of thugs and billionaires. This modern story of fortune-seeking in the oil boom towns of West Texas is both thought-provoking and enthralling.
9. Star Wars: The Bad Lot
The final season of Star Wars: The Ugly Lot offers a thrilling, fast-paced conclusion to Clone Force 99’s journey. As they fight to reunite with Omega, who faces his own trials in an Imperial laboratory, the group must overcome immense challenges, forge unexpected alliances, and push their limits like never before from now.
The stakes are high, the missions are bold, and the storytelling is sharp, making this season an emotional and heartfelt farewell to these beloved characters.
10. Lords of the Air
As a longtime fan of Band of brothers AND The Pacific, Masters of the Air told another incredible story. The series captures the courage and struggles of American bombers during World War II as they brought the battle to Hitler’s doorstep.
The dogfight scenes were breathtaking and the human stories were deeply moving, making it one of the top dramas of the year for me.
Whether you like action-packed adaptations, heartwarming comedies, or gripping historical dramas, this year delivered some fantastic shows.
