Director Adam McKay he is no stranger to controversy. He has made some controversial films, such as Vice AND Don’t look upand openly expressed his political leanings.
Now McKay is talking about a popular Hollywood film that he says is on the verge of so much controversy that it may actually be banned in a conservative-leaning future.
McKay praised the Arianna Grande AND Cinzia Erivo— took to the musical on social media earlier this week, but noted that its “radical” subject matter could very well see the film reach its end in future years.
McKay wrote on X:
“On a pure narrative level Wicked part 1 is right up there as one of the most radical Hollywood films ever made.
“I know Part 2 it returns a little to the center but Part 1 speaks openly of radicalization in the face of careerism, fascism, propaganda.”
He continued to compare Evil to other self-defined “radical” films such as The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Sound of Music, The Hunger Games, AND Citizen Kane. Then he continued:
“What is really striking Wicked part 1 it’s that it’s coming out NOW, when America has never been more right-wing and propagandized.
“And yes, I know the stage production and the book are much older, so some of the timing is a coincidence, but still…”
Based on By Gregory Maguire 1995 novel and Tony Award-winning musical, Evil follows the young witch Elphaba (Erivo) as she attends Shiz University.
While there, she befriends her roommate Galinda (Grande) and becomes an animal rights advocate after seeing the creatures being imprisoned and stripped of their jobs and language abilities.
When an X user commented on his interest in seeing the film after learning about it, McKay responded: “I think you’ll be shocked. If America continues down this path, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the film banned in 3-5 years.”
He refused to back down on his hypothesis after a second user asked him how far he believed a potential ban on the film would go.
“Jesus man. Do you really think I’m 100% saying that the movie will definitely be banned to the point that no one will ever be able to see it? McKay wrote. “The idea of shutting down nonprofits at the discretion of the President has been around. Things are changing fast.
Evil it’s not just about government censorship, but also about friendship and someone finding their destiny in the midst of hardship. It’s a beautiful musical and deserves its audience. We hope that the films and all expressions of our right to free speech will remain unchanged moving forward.
