SCRUBS creator explains why he was reluctant to bring back the show, calls the reboot a ‘must-see’ situation

THE Scrub the reboot is officially in the works at ABC with 20th Television and the creator Bill Lawrence It’s pretty good that the show will be able to recreate some of the fun and magic of the original series.

Lawrence was clear that he’s “always been reluctant” to revisit the medical sitcom, but he’s confident in the upcoming reboot.

He told the Los Angeles Times: “If I thought it was a bad idea, I wouldn’t do it. I don’t chase commerce and, without self-aggrandizement, I don’t need it.

“Creatively, if someone said, ‘Do you want to choose? Scrub returning to the same hospital with the same people on a normal day, did everything go back to normal?’ No, that would be false to history.

“I’m curious and I can think of a lot of stories about where some of these characters are years later, no longer being kid interns, and having new young people around them, with the way the medical world has changed – yeah , without a shadow of a doubt. That creative response was easy.

He went on to talk about how getting the old gang back together is a win-win, and despite the outcome, it’ll just be fun to see them reunite. However he has a lot of faith in the attached writers:

“The thing that has changed is that the cast are all close in real life and like many of us, at this point in our lives, we crave that experience. AS [there’s] the amount of friends who [say]’Man, it would be fun to relive that experience because we all really loved each other.’

“And you tie it directly to a time in Hollywood where not only are we not doing a lot of things, but people who I really care about and love, both in front of and behind the camera, are scrambling, scrambling to get work.

“The best thing for the show is the sad situation that there are amazing writers available. It won’t be a mail-in cash grab. There will be a lot of originals Scrub writers on the show; there will also be a lot of new writers.

“Someone said, ‘I hope this doesn’t happen.’ That made me incredulous. Like, why on earth would you care if that happened? He says, “I love the show so much that it would tarnish it.”

“The programs I care about have had reboots. That’s my attitude: If it’s a show I love, I’ll watch it. If it’s great, I’ll be super happy. If it’s good, though, at least it didn’t offend me.

“And if it sucks, I’ll be super happy to badmouth my friends how much it sucks. Not on the Internet. But that’s how I watch TV. For me it’s something not to be missed. What’s the problem?”

Lawrence added: “Not to get too deep into it, I have my own things to work on. You mentioned it before and probably, without telling anyone the reasons, I would just say: I’m just doing this because it’s something that’s important to me for my own stuff. I will live with the consequences.”

The two-time Emmy winner plans to begin writing the reboot in the new year, noting that a deal with a showrunner “is in the works as we speak, but as soon as it’s done, we’ll get started.”

While he wouldn’t name the nominee, Lawrence noted, “We’ve already shot the scenes because we’re old friends, but we’re going to start to get the sense of where the world begins and who’s doing what.

They said it was so strange to go back and watch every episode. My ultimate goal in this whole thing is to simply restore the music from the old episodes.

With Lawrence on board, 20th TV is moving to protect the main network Scrub original cast— Zach Braffwho plays John “JD” Dorian, Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), Donald Faison (Christopher Turk) e John C. McGinley (Perry Cox).

It is not clear whether Judy Reyes will return as no-nonsense nurse Carla Espinosa, who left the medical comedy before its final season. According to sources, his character was considered in early plans for the reboot.
