Frank Grillo Says Marvel Is Great, But He Prefers Working With DC: ‘It’s Much More Personal’

Actor Franco Grillo he’s one of the few who has ventured across comic book lines to star in both Marvel and DC Studio projects. The actor played the role of “Crossbones” Brock Rumlow in the MCU and now voices the character Rick Flag Sr. for the Max animated series Commando of creatures.

In a recent interview, Grillo explained the differences between the two studies. He told Entertainment Weekly:

“They are very different. Marvel is a different machine, and it’s great in its own right, but the thing I love about James and Peter’s DC is that it’s much more contained.

“It’s a lot more personal and I actually enjoy it more. I love being a part of something in its embryonic stage and being able to grow with it and observe it and flourish.

Grillo first played Brock Rumlow in Marvel Captain America: The Winter Soldierreleased in 2014. He would later reprise his role in the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War and 2019 Avengers: Endgame. Grillo also voiced the character in his animated version for the Disney+ series What if…? in 2021.

The actor plays Rick Flag Sr. in Commando of creatures and will continue to play him in the DC Universe with active appearances Peacemaker Season 2 and Superman.

“With Commando of creatures AND PeacemakerFlag is a prominent figure in the stories. With Supermanit just kind of pops,” he said EW.

Grillo also talked about his look for the live-action version of Rick Flag Sr., saying he shot both Peacemaker AND Superman while I was also shooting King of Tulsaadding, “We were limited to what we could do with my hair. I just had to use what I had and try to make it as interesting as possible. I had every intention of dyeing it white and cutting it into slices, but I couldn’t do it.

Commando of creatures is currently streaming on HBO and MAX. Superman AND Peacemaker the second season will debut in 2025.
