The Batman The fandom may be at a strange crossroads. The report has surfaced again that the co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn he has reportedly expressed interest in bringing Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the greater DC Universe (DCU).
But there is a small hitch as a director Matt Reeves he doesn’t agree with the idea. While fans are already preparing for two distinct cinematic interpretations of the Dark Knight, Gunn’s possible desire to merge Pattinson’s Batman with his own DCU universe will hurt the grounded, gritty, noir-inspired Reeves.
This most recent report comes from the latest episode of The Hot Mic podcast, where co-host Jeff Sneider shared insights into the situation.
Sneider revealed that Gunn “wants Pattinson in the DCU,” but Reeves is “resistant” to the idea. Reeves’ vision for The Batman trilogy and the world he is meticulously building around it seems to be at odds with the larger, more interconnected DCU that Gunn is building.
Sneider also clarified that reported production delays continue Batman Part II are not connected to this debate, attributing them to a “personal thing” which he chose not to delve into.
Gunn has already openly discussed the possibility of merging these two Batman worlds, saying: “I’ve thought about it, yes. I contemplate everything and talk about everything.
“I am committed to both telling stories in the DCU and telling stories of Elseworlds. We want to be able to tell a story where Superman is very different or tell one Red Sun story… We want to be able to play with these characters in different ways.”
He also highlighted one of DC’s unique strengths over Marvel, saying, “One of the things I love about DC comics versus Marvel is that [Elseworlds] the stories are much more abundant… I think that’s part of the fun of DC.”
When a rumor previously spread about Robert Pattinson’s Batman joining the DCU, Gunn responded by saying, “This is completely false.”
Even though Gunn denies it, the reports continue to come in from insiders, like Sneider, who seem very confident in what they’re reporting.
If there’s any truth to this, I think it makes a lot more sense to simply keep Gunn’s DCU separate from Reeve’s Batman universe. I’m not sure why Gunn would consider merging these two very different worlds.
