The Marvel Cinematic Universe is preparing for an explosive clash Captain America: Brave New World, pitting Sam Wilson’s Captain America against President “Thunderbolt” Ross as the rampaging Red Hulk.
The film’s creative team shared some interesting insights into how Sam will handle this big challenge and why Red Hulk won’t be wearing a mustache.
Some fans have wondered how a Captain America without superpowers could survive a fight against the Hulk, given Sam’s choice in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier refuse the super soldier serum.
According to executive producer Nate Moore, this was a key question from the beginning. He told Entertainment Weekly, “As soon as we decided this was the story we were going to tell, we realized there was a big obstacle.”
Dan Cox, the film’s visual effects supervisor, added bluntly: “If he gets punched, his head will fly.”
The solution was to give Sam a Wakandan-designed Vibranium suit, designed to help Sam survive, though not necessarily dominate. This was revealed previously, but elaborating on it, Moore said:
“I say ‘a little’ because it’s a Red Hulk. What are you going to do? We’re very conscious of not making the movie feel fake. So, giving Sam the equipment to survive is different than giving Sam the equipment to succeed. “
Cox then elaborated on the choreography required for such a fight: “We had to choreograph the fight sequences to allow him to constantly use them as, basically, two additional limbs so he can take Hulk’s punches from time to time, but he does everything he can to avoid them anyway. you’ll see in the action sequence; it’s not funny when he gets hit.”
Anthony Mackie he previously talked about his new outfit saying: He goes on to explain that his new outfit evens the odds in these fights, saying, “It’s a high-tech outfit. I went to Wakanda, I met everyone in Wakanda, we had dinner. It was a great time. They threw me a welcome party, it was great, but when I left they gave me a dress, right?”
“I’ve been wearing it. I can kick harder, I can fly faster and it gives me the ability to be more agile in my abilities, so it’s taking all my skills to a whole different level.”
One of the funniest revelations is that concept art of Red Hulk with a mustache exists, even though it didn’t make it into the final cut. Head of Visual Development at Marvel Studios Ryan Meinerding confirmed this detail.
Moore also reflected late on William Hurtwho originally played Thunderbolt Ross and shared that Hurt was excited to reprise the role before his passing:
“When he left, it was a surprise. Find out whether it is worth continuing with the story you have or trying something else. It happened that Harrison Ford contacted [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige on the possibility of playing in the Marvel sandbox.”
Harrison Fordnow taking on the role of Ross, saw the role as a way to honor Hurt’s legacy while continuing the character’s arc. Moore revealed:
“What we liked was the idea of a man who tries to do his best but can’t escape the demons of his past. Turning a guy who hunted the Hulk into a Hulk makes him more an antagonist; it makes him a tragic character.”
Moore also mentioned it Secret Empire, a notable comedic plot, serves as a key inspiration for the film.
In the film “After the meeting with the newly elected president of the United States Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford Making his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident.
“He must uncover the motive behind a nefarious global conspiracy before the true mastermind causes the entire world to see red.”
The first reactions that emerged from the film were not good. the film is described as “irrelevant” and “flat”. But we’ll just have to wait to see the film with our own eyes.
What do you think of Mackie’s comments about how Sam Wilson will be able to effectively stand up to and fight super-powered villains?
Captain America: Brave New World will be released in American theaters on February 14, 2025.
