David Ayerthe director of 2016 Suicide squadhas found himself at the center of controversy once again, but this time it’s not about his infamous “Ayer Cut”. Suicide squad. Instead, he’s responding to fan backlash for showing public support for James Gunn and the director’s next film Superman.
Days before Gunn revealed the first trailer for Superman: LegacyAyer took to X to address his followers who have been campaigning for the release of his original version Suicide squad.
In a supportive move, Ayer asked his supporters to temporarily suspend their efforts, showing solidarity with Gunn and his launch into the new DC Universe.
“I didn’t realize James was falling Commando of creatures when the latest Ayer Cut campaign arrived. The new Superman The trailer will be out soon and I know there are intentions of another campaign for my version of Skwad.”
Ayer explained the importance of supporting other filmmakers and suggested fans avoid campaigning during the trailer release.
“As a director, I want to support other directors. I’m excited to see the trailer and I hear it’s pretty amazing.”
He concluded by thanking fans for their understanding, saying: “At the end of the day, I’m riding a tiger here. I’m just going hard on this one.
Despite Ayer’s request, some fans were quick to criticize him for siding with Gunn. Ayer responded to the backlash, expressing frustration with the situation.
“My Lord. If supporting another director is that controversial, I’m just lost at this point. When I was a child I had a nightmare childhood. My best friends were comics. They held me and gave me company when no one else did.
He continued: “Batman spoke to my wounded soul. Superman’s optimism was an example of how to see the world without darkness.”
Ayer doubled down on his enthusiasm for Gunn’s work: “I can’t wait to see James’ trailer. Real talk. And I can’t wait to see his film. … That simple Superman optimism is everywhere. And the child in me needs it right now.”
In a blunt observation, Ayer addressed the criticism directly: “Am I a bad guy for this? So be it. I troll about what I can control. And I can’t what I can’t. I’ll step back from all of this for a moment.
I guess Ayer mentioned that the step back is on social media.
The renewed spotlight on Ayer comes amid ongoing discussions over his role Suicide squad. Ayer previously revealed on
“All I know is that my unseen film works much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut feels real and organic. And Gunn told me it was time to share it.”
In December, Ayer reiterated his belief that his cut would eventually see the light of day. “It’s coming. Something’s about to happen. Something will be revealed. The truth always comes out.”
Ayer’s long journey with the Suicide squad the saga is fascinating and is built around fan fervor and studio politics. However, his support of Gunn and the new Superman project highlights his commitment to the broader world of cinema.
We’ll just have to wait and see how this all intertwines and continues to unfold.
