The new Superman The trailer is full of great images and nostalgic moments for fans of the iconic DC superhero, and one of the biggest hits was the use of John Williams’original score.
Director James Gunn he recently explained why he wanted to incorporate Williams’ score into his film, saying, “I mean, John Williams’ score… it’s one of the greatest scores of all time.
“And you know, that’s the thing I loved when I saw the movie as a kid. If that was the thing I liked most, it was the soundtrack, I wanted to pay homage to it.”
It makes perfect sense to include this theme song because it is forever linked to Superman, which IS the Superman theme song now and forever.
This time, however, composer John Murphy he is giving us his contribution. Gunn spoke about his initial meetings with Murphy regarding the film’s score, saying:
“When I first talked to John Murphy, who’s our composer, you know, I thought, ‘Listen, I want you to do something completely out there.’”
Gunn added that the film is “all about this score” and that the two began working on it long before the script was even finished.
“I wanted at least part of the Williams theme to be part of something… John Murphy, he took on the challenge 100% and created something really beautiful. And when you listen to the whole score and you know what I mean.
“It’s a mix of new and traditional in a way we’ve never seen. But I also think it’s food for the soul, you know.”
What do you think about how Williams’ score will be used in Gunn’s Superman film based on what we saw and heard in the first teaser trailer?
Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
