Superman director James Gunn recently shared his admiration for David Corenswetthe actor who will take on the role of Clark Kent/Superman, and talked about how the actor reminded him Christopher Reeve.
In a post-teaser Q&A, Gunn revealed why Corenswet’s portrayal of the iconic hero resonates so strongly with him, highlighting the actor’s dedication, training and authenticity.
Gunn explained: “The thing that connects him so much to Christopher Reeve is that he has very deep training. For example, I have never worked in my entire life with such a rigorous actor.
“He challenged me daily to get the most out of his character and his story. Everything he does in the film is absolutely true.”
Gunn’s praise doesn’t stop there. He described Corenswet’s performance as fluid, recalling that even while watching raw footage, every moment felt genuine.
“You never have a moment, even looking at the dailies, where you go, ‘David did something that seems stupid, that doesn’t seem real, that seems like he’s faking it and saying it,’ ever. It is always completely present.
Gunn also recounted how his initial anxiety about finding the right Clark Kent quickly faded. “It was almost miraculous. The funniest thing is that I have both Rachels [Brosnahan] and David’s recordings during our first day of casting.
“So the thing that worried me the most was casting Superman at the beginning of the process, and after the first day, I was like, ‘I think that guy’s pretty good.’”
Reeve’s portrayal of Superman remains a benchmark for superhero performances, combining charm, vulnerability and heroism. For Gunn, seeing a similar spark in Corenswet signals that fans may be looking for a Superman who embodies the timeless qualities fans are hoping to see in this film.
