Macaulay Culkin attended a screening of his classic Christmas film at the Rosemont Theater this month, At home alone. While speaking about his feelings about the film all these years later, Culkin, 44, said he was considering buying the real McCallister family home featured in the Christmas movie when it recently went up for sale. “I had half a mind to buy it, just for laughs,” he said, according to the New York Times.
But he had never thought about moving into the Winnetka, Illinois property himself. Instead, he shared, he would turn it into something as iconic as the 1990 film: a “movie fun house” where people could reenact scenes like the one in which his character, Kevin McCallister, sleds down the stairs ! It would have been full of photo ops, props and memorabilia and it would have been amazing.
Ultimately, the reason he changed his mind about purchasing was completely understandable. “I got kids. I’m busy, man,” he said. Culkin shares two young children with his girlfriend Brenda Song.
Culkin still honors the legacy of this great film in commercials and videos that pay homage to his character, and he credits his family for allowing him to see the film in a new light, calling it both a “curse and a blessing” to have it catapulted. becoming a child celebrity at ten.
“That’s why I look at the movie differently now,” he said, seeing it through his children’s eyes. “I look at it through a different lens: I look at it with them. And they have no idea who they’re sitting next to.”
Culkin previously spoke about watching the film with his oldest son Dakota, 3, during an interview with E! News at the beginning of December.
“He thinks he’s Kevin,” Culkin said. “I was like, ‘Do you remember sledding down the stairs?’ And he’s like, ‘Mmhmm, yeah.’ I’m like, ‘Do you remember when he had yellow hair?’ And he’s like, ‘Uh-huh, yeah.'”
The historic home from the film hit the market for $5.25 million in May.
The five-bedroom, six-bathroom abode offers an array of luxury amenities, including a fully equipped gym, state-of-the-art movie theater and indoor sports court. It was built in 1921 and spans 9,126 square feet.
