2023 was a landmark year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel’s trajectory was destined to see Kang the Conqueror be the next Thanos-level villain.
Jonathan Majors he first appeared as Kang in the series Loki in 2021, and then appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania in 2023. He was cast as the main villain in what he was Avengers: Kang Dynasty in 2026, but is now known as Avengers: Judgment Day.
When Majors was released from his contract with Marvel a year ago after being found guilty of domestic violence, Marvel took a different path that includes the Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. returning to play the evil Doctor Doom.
While fans are pretty excited to see how this will play out, there are a lot of questions swirling about what will happen between now and then.
While we wait for confirmed information or the release of the next films, we have some spoilery rumors to think about.
According to Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus (via CBM), the plan is still for a multiversal war that will take place in Avengers: Judgment Day AND Avengers: Secret Wars. However, instead of Kang front and center, it will revolve around other heroes and villains from across the Multiverse.
At least four Anchor Beings will take part in these films and he delves into past claims that there will be some sort of blame game when it comes to the current state of the Multiverse.
“[Avengers: Doomsday] will focus on who exactly is to blame for the current state of the Multiverse. Was it Kang? Were they its variants? Was it someone else?
“What I feel is that they’re going to try to shift the blame to Doctor Strange, and that’s a motif that’s been building for a while now.”
He continued:
“[The] The idea is to make Strange the common denominator when it comes to raids. And a lot of these films are Strange trying to reject that notion [all] Strangers are meant to doom the universe, making him the one who chooses to save it.”
One particularly interesting note is that Clea from the Incursion is said to have wanted Strange’s help Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ The post-credits scene was caused by the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It appears that the stinger had more importance to the larger Multiverse saga than initially expected.
Other minor tidbits include Moon Knight not having a role in the next one Avengers movies and Thunderbolts, Young Avengers and Franklin Richards are all crucial to the story.
Between this and other recent updates, it seems increasingly likely that Doctor Doom sets out to “save” the Multiverse, albeit in his typically arrogant and evil way.
However, villains making a compelling argument is nothing new to the MCU, as it’s something we’ve previously seen explored through Thanos, for example.
Avengers: Judgment Day will be released in May 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars expected arrival in May 2027.
