Sarah Michelle Gellar Talks Her Change of Mind About a Possible BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reboot

Fan of the hit series from the 90s and 2000s Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been diehards since the show first aired. Some have wondered if in this age of reboots we might see members of the original cast return to make some new episodes.

It never seemed like a possibility, as the star of the show, Sarah Michelle Gellarshe was pretty close to the idea, but changed her tone a bit.

During a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show (via CB), the iconic actress expressed a newfound openness to the possibility of returning to the Buffyverse. He explained what triggered his change of heart:

“It’s fun. I always said no, because he’s in his own bubble and he’s so perfect. But watching Sex and the City [sequel series, And Just Like That] and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do that, definitely makes you think, ‘Well, maybe.’”

Just last year, Gellar firmly rejected the idea of returning to the series in an interview SFX Magazinewhere he said:

“I’m very proud of the show we created and there’s no need to do that. We finished it. I’m all for them continuing the story because it’s the story of female empowerment.

“I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has power can have power.’ It’s perfectly set up for someone else to have the power.

“But like I said, Buffy’s metaphors were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I’m not a teenager.”

The actress currently stars in Paramount+ Dexter: Original sin as CIS chief Tanya Martin, and chronicles the series’ expanded universe with its original show.

“It could be anything,” he explained to Barrymore. “It’s a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world we need those heroes, I think, more than ever.

Although a return could mean a passing of the baton. In an April 2023 interview with Variety, Gellar explained how the series finale actually laid the groundwork for future stories:

“It’s an interesting question. I think the way we left the show was set up for that. There was a reason why the idea was that instead of “in a generation there is a Slayer,” why not share the power among women.”

However, while she is in favor of continuing the narrative, Gellar argues that she should not be the one holding the stake. “I just don’t think it should be me because of these inevitable comparisons.

But I think if someone gets in through the other Slayers, we left them there for a reason. We could have just ended it, but we didn’t.

So I completely agree; if anyone has that story, I just don’t think I’m the person they are – no, let me rephrase that. I know I’m not the right person to tell that story.”

Would you be happy to see the Buffyverse return, even if Gellar wasn’t the focus?
