STAR WARS Theory that SKELETON CREW is a prequel story to CAPTAIN EO

STAR WARS Theory that SKELETON CREW is a prequel story to CAPTAIN EO

There’s an intriguing and fun theory circulating online that suggests as much Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew could secretly serve as a prequel to Disneyland’s iconic ’80s sci-fi musical short, Captain EO.

This theory has caused a lot of excitement among some fans. There’s a Reddit thread where fans have been dissecting potential connections between the two projects.

Even before Skeleton crew aired, there was speculation of a possible connection to Captain EO. Now, after watching the series, fans are reviving the idea. Here are some links:

Character similarities: Fans notice that Wim, one of the young adventurers in Skeleton crewbears a striking resemblance to a young EO Captain. Meanwhile, Neel is compared to Hooter, the clumsy alien Captain EO. These parallels are too specific for fans to dismiss as coincidence.

Familiar alien species: A caged alien seen in Skeleton crew is identified as the same species present in Captain EO. This visual appeal is intentional.

Location of the premiere: Then there’s the eyebrow-raising detail of the premiere Skeleton crew was held in the same Disneyland theater where Captain EO was originally screened. This choice of location seems more symbolic and must be a nod to the shared DNA between the two stories.

Captain EO was a 3D science fiction musical short film that premiered at Disneyland in 1986. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucashe acted Michael Jackson as Captain EO, a space hero on a mission to deliver a gift to an evil Supreme Leader (played by Angelica Huston) and saves his world.

Personally I loved it Captain EO as a child. Any trip to Disneyland wasn’t complete without watching it. Even though I only saw it three or four times before it closed, the film left a lasting impression on me.

Its mix of imaginative world-building, musical energy and message of hope captured everything magical about Disney Parks of that era.

While I find the theory incredibly interesting, I’m skeptical. Lucasfilm hasn’t exactly shied away from exploring bold ideas in its Star Wars content, but officially tying the series to Captain EO It seems like a stretch.

That said, the parallels are strong and I have no doubts about that Captain EO was part of the inspiration for Skeleton crew.

What do you think? I could Skeleton crew truly be the long-lost backstory Captain EOor is it just a fun way to reframe a nostalgic favorite? Either way, it’s exciting to see how these stories continue to resonate with fans.
